 B. 1927 - Leroy Neiman is probably the most popular painter and printmaker in America. Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Neiman studied in St. Paul before moving to Chicago to study at the School of Art Institute of Chicago where he also taught for 10 years before moving to New York City in 1962. Through his art, Neiman has explored contemporary leisure, all the pastimes and places people enjoy, and particularly the world of sports, entertainment, and wildlife. LeRoy Neiman's style explodes with the dramatic intensity of Abstract Expressionist brush strokes, strokes that pick out action that is strikingly accurate. This unique combination is so appealing that Neiman has brought art into the lives of more people than most post-war American artists put together. Recently, the World 2010 Games Foundation announced it has commissioned internationally renowned artist LeRoy Neiman as the Official Commemorative Artist of the 2010 Games. As the Official Commemorative Artist, Neiman will create an original painting that will serve as the "Official Image of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games," as well as a commemorative print that will incorporate each of the eight disciplines that will be featured at the 2010 Games.

Leroy Neiman drew this portrait of John Matuszak live on October 14th, 1981 and it has been in the Matuszak's family possession ever since. John Daniel Matuszak (October 25, 1950 - June 17, 1989), nicknamed Tooz, was an American football player in the NFL who later became an actor. He was the first draft pick of 1973 and played most of his career with the Oakland Raiders until he retired after winning his second Super Bowl in 1981. Matuszak participated in the 1978 World's Strongest Man competition, where he placed 9th. As an actor, he is probably most remembered as deformed Sloth in The Goonies (1985). |

Hand signed and dated on front 1958. Hand signed and dated on the verso 2007. This beautiful New York Skyline portrays retro/abstract style New York City before the Twin Towers were built. This painting is featured on page 63 of the Five Decades book published by Harry Abrams, 2003. The book photo was printed from a transparency which was printed backwards in the book by error. Leroy Neiman viewed this painting in his New York Studio in March 2007. At this time Mr. Neiman again hand signed the painting and dated it on the back of the board when he inspected it. The 50 year old painting was cleaned recently to reveal the original vibrant use of color. This painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity hand signed by LeRoy Neiman and a certificate of authenticity from the Art Brokerage. |
