1860-1899. John Leslie Breck was raised in Massachusetts, but spent much of his adult life in Europe. His art training progressed in Leipzig, Munich and Antwerp, and he also attended the Academie Julian in Paris. Later on he spent summers at Giverny, near Claude Monet's residence, and studied French Impressionism (along with Willard Metcalf and Theodore Robinson). Some of the works he painted during this period were sent back to the U.S. for exhibition and were very well received. His colorful garden paintings were always successful.
