Story / Additional InfoAcquired directly from artist in 1990 when he was first commissioned by Augusta National to paint select holes. Wayland chose to paint the 10th because of all the shading & contours of the hole. The story behind this unique rendering is that when it was submitted to Augusta National, Chairman Hord Hardin declined approval stating that while Wayland's depiction was quite possibly the best he had ever seen, a depression in the fairway had been painted that was not there (Mr. Hardin was legendary in his meticulous oversight of the traditions of the Masters). Wayland respectfully asked that Mr. Hardin take a 2nd look. He replied that if he had painted the depression, then it was there. Hearing this, Chairman Hardin invited Wayland to come to Augusta and they would visit the hole together. Wayland accepted the invite. Upon inspection of the fairway, Mr. Hardin saw the depression, turned and apologized to Wayland, and granted the commission. Truly a piece of Masters history!
