Provenance / HistoryThis is a collage work about memory and vision. The noted Neuroscientist, E.Reynolds says of this work,"The paint pours, the colors swirl and drip. Kerns' brain embedded in his body has become knowing of viscosity, the interactions of the flows, and the time of drying paint. Without the body, the brain can't sense or act.but the embodiment of Kerns' brain is more than that. In the act of creating, the brain the brain can't sense or act, but the embodiment of Kerns' brain is more than that. In the act of creating the brain and body have become intertwined, engaging in an intricate dialogue that is largely unconscious. The somatosensory system which has adopted the canvas as its own, forms fast acting networks with the visual pathway, merging in the parietal lobe and consulting with the cerebellum. The self which is firmly rooted in both the conscious and unconscious mind, contemplated the self-not self of the of the canvas and the feelings of the body as it moves through space. Motor pathways output exquisite control of the developing forms..." The work is deeply connected to to Kerns' roots in abstract-expressionism...and the emotive connectivity that builds form.
Story / Additional InfoThis work along with others was recently shown in the retrospective exhibit and Lafayette College Galleries entitled "Ed Kerns Interconnected" A fully illustrated catalog of the exhibit (76 pages, 70 illustrations, 4 essays). The expressionist imagery modulates the location of memory to the known locations in the brain from which recollections are constructed. Kerns is noted for his collaborative work with Biologists, Neuroscientists, and Engineers. His use of images from anatomy and physics is breaking new ground in the articulation of perception and consciousness.
