    Story / Additional InfoThe artist is playing with many modernist ideas here, particularly relating to the historical progress of feminism. The figures are all female borrowed from classical statues and paintings, arranged in a setting that could be around a large window, looking in or out to the future, with what appear to be the bars of a jail at the top. The interior parts of the body are also displayed, with images from biology drawings, again emphasizing the idea of interior versus exterior. The figure at the bottom is more modern but wears a mask, perhaps questioning her identity or her place in society’s order. The heavy impasto underneath is emphasized by scumbling on top with pastels and hints at a volcanic like disruption of the women’s role in society. This is an example of painted collage which the artist has perfected and continues to develop.
