Provenance / HistoryThis mixed media work is part of a larger group of works first shown in the retrospective, "Ed Kerns: Interconnected" held in the galleries at Lafayette College in 2022. This work constructs a visual vocabulary for layered, complicated ideas that results in organic, fluid forms which express the complexities of memory construction and reveal the multiple senses that build perception. According to the noted Neuroscientist, Elaine Reynolds, "There are so many barriers to a deep understanding of fields that encompass different vocabularies, concepts, and worldviews. Kerns, through his life long passion for both science and art , has created conceptual bridges across multiple disciplines, expressing ideas that reach for alternative perspectives within one form. This is particularly true in his in his exploration of ideas in the realm of neuroscience." Kerns is an artist whose roots are abstract expressionism and, he uses those roots to explore the emotive pathways in perception and consciousness.
Story / Additional InfoThis work grows out of an earlier series entitled "The Octopus Meditations" which explored consciousness as a fundamental part of the universe from meditations and collaborative research on Octopus intelligence. Catalogs are available for exhibitions resulting from this work. The ultimate goal of the collaborative projects with neuroscientists, biologists and engineers is a consilient view of the unity of knowledge. Knowledge like the universe and consciousness appears to be one whole.
