Story / Additional InfoElephant Presenting Flower To A Bird was created during Geisel's days at Dartmouth College. This time was an extremely prolific period for Geisel. As editor and political cartoonist for the school magazine, Jack-O-Lantern, Geisel's humorous artwork gained instant popularity. He also created a number of striking drawings and paintings during this mid-1920's, many evoking the mood and feel of art deco's rising popularity. Elephant Presenting Flower To A Bird strikes a wonderful balance between Geisel's sophisticated artistic compositions and his love for child-like absurdity. Although Horton, Geisel's wildly popular elephant character, didn't appear in a Seuss book until 1940, he makes his big screen debut in this early painting. The two Horton books, Horton hatches an Egg (1940) and Horton Hears A Who! (1954) each present a further exploration of the concepts laid out in Geisel's private work so many years earlier.
