Provenance / HistoryThis Collage work is made of multiple materials including acrylic paint, watercolor, archival papers, vinyl cut out, rubber stamps, inks and markers. The subject matter is a meditation on the complexities involved in memory and perception processes. Nothing exists in the intellect that was not first taken in by the senses. Modern neuroscience and biology stress the interrelatedness of the mind and the body.....perceptually they are one and the chemical cascades produced for reactive purposes meld the physical actions of thinking and reacting.....consciousness according to Menas Kafatos is a fundamental property of the universe....thus the call and response nature of art making makes it a revealing modality for consciousness studies. This work explores the physical non local aspects of our relationship with the environment.
Story / Additional InfoThe Collage is a part of a larger group of works first shown at an exhibit entitled, "Ed Kerns: Interconnected", a retrospective of the artist's work over a 50 year career. The links to Kerns' abstract -expressionist roots are clear. These pieces are expressive, emotive and spontaneous--all fundamental tenets of the New York School of Painting which came to the forefront internationally at mid 20th century and continues to be a major force within the field of Art.
