Story / Additional InfoEditions Sabatier, publisher.; Stanley William Hayter, printer. rnMatta Catalogue Raisonné: 3, Sabatier rnrnThis work comes from Matta's New School portfolio of 10 etchings, which were the first etchings ever created by Matta. The copper plates were executed in the studio of legendary printmaker Stanley William Hayter at the New School for Social Research in New York in 1943. Hayter's studio was a central point for many of the leading avant-garde Europeans who came to New York to escape the wartime occupation of Paris. The portfolio was not published until 1980, after Matta had rediscovered seven of the plates in 1978 and the remaining three in 1979.

Roberto Sebastian Matta - Chile
Art Brokerage: Roberto Sebastian Matta Chilean Artist: b. 1911-2005. Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta was born in Santiago, Chile in 1911. He studied architecture at the Universidad Catolica in Santiago. In 1933 Matta traveled to Paris and worked for two years as a draftsman in the Paris studio of famed architect Le Corbusier. While visiting his aunt in Madrid, he met Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Neruda introduced Matta to Salvador Dali and Andre Breton. Impressed by Matta's drawings, Breton invited him to join the Surrealist group in 1937. Influenced by his association with the Surrealists and by Marcel Duchamp's theories of movement and process, Matta began to explore the realm of the subconscious and to develop an imagery of cosmic creation and destruction. Robert Matta passed away in 2005. All Matta original works must have authentication and provenance before listing. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
