Art Brokerage: Allen Jones, RA British Blue Chip Pop Artist: b. 1937. Allen Jones' work is generally regarded as the embodiment of British Pop. The fundamental concerns of the artist are the human figure and the fusion of representational form. His attitudes and style remain self-consciously detached as Jones mixes different visual language systems within a single painting, playing on the disparity between the illusion of the image and its substance as paint. It is this marriage of styles which links Jones to other British artist associated with Pop. Since the mid-1960s Jones has found inspiration in the dynamic treatment of the human figure that is to be found in drawings that exist outside the fine art area - postcards, calendars and fetish magazines - and has invested his own images of women with a provocative eroticism as a means of arousing the viewer's emotional response. Jones's fiber glass sculptures from the late 1960s, which depict women as furniture, provide the most extreme statement of this theme. Jones has always been engaged in work with the popular arts by creating posters, costumes and stage design for both the theater and television. His influence has been felt in graphic design, fashion and photography. These are fruitful, but incidental excursions, for Jones remains dedicated above all to extending the traditions of painting and lithography through reference to modern experience using the human figure.
