Duncan Johnson
United StatesArt Brokerage: Duncan Johnson American Artist: Duncan Johnson's work uses discarded bits of wood from landfills and construction sites near his home in Vermont. He uses these left-behind remnants of modern disposable consumer culture to create rich and beautiful assemblages that straddle the line between painting and sculpture. His work rewards close inspection with rich subtle colors, complex interwoven textures and masterful craftsmanship. What initially appear to be large single pieces of wood are revealed to be made up of thousands of individually carved and meticulously assembled wooden bits. Johnson's work recalls classic traditional New England craftsmanship filtered through a modernist sensibility. Duncan Johnson earned a BFA from the Pratt Institute in New York. Johnson's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the United States, primarily in the Northeast. He is the recipient of many awards including a 2010 Pollock Krasner Foundation Artist Grant, the Vermont Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award.
