Art Brokerage: Jules Rene Herve French Artist: b.1887-1981. Jules-René Hervé was a French artist who relied on the artistic developments pioneered by the French Impressionists and painted the same subjects - paintings drawn from modern life - well into the 20th century. He may be best thought of as a painterly realist, an artist whose works were grounded in solid draftsmanship with well constructed figures, but handled in a loose, painterly manner. Herve's works were divided between interior scenes, rural landscapes and urban landscapes of Paris, but it will always be his highly atmospheric depictions of Paris for which he will be most known.
Jules-René Hervé was born on April 14, 1887 in the small city of Langres, an ancient Gallic stronghold, which is in the Haute-Marne, in the Champagne region. While his father was a former seminarian, his uncle Jules-Alfred Hervé, who was two decades older than his nephew, was an artist and teacher. It was his uncle, who he was named for, who served as his first teacher and played a crucial role in Hervé's artistic development. He first attended Collège Diderot in his hometown, which was named for Denis Diderot (1713-1784), the enlightenment philosopher, writer and pioneering encyclopédiste, who also hailed from Langres.
