Kiyoshi Shimizu
JapanArt Brokerage: Kiyoshi Shimizu Japanese Artist: b. 1900-1969. Kiyoshi Shimizu, and his brother Toshi Shimizu were two of Seattle's most prominent early artists. Born in Japan, Kiyoshi came to San Francisco in 1921 then moving on to New York City where he and his brother attended the Art Students League in 1923, meeting and subsequently sharing an apartment with fellow artist, George Tera. Shimizu exhibited at the Salons of America and the Society of Independent Artists in NYC from 1925-1931. His works are included in "Japanese and Japanese-American Painter in the United States: A Half Centurey of Hope and Suffering, 1895-1945. His abstract expressionist works can be found in the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Museum, the Permanent Collection of LACMA and The Japanese-American Museum.
