Art Brokerage: Li Shan Chinese Artist: B. 1942. Since his emergence amongst the 85 New Wave, Li Shan has been on the forefront of the Chinese avant-garde. With Rouge Series (1989), a celebrated series of paintings, silkscreen, and collage in which Li depicted, among other subjects, many Andy Warhol-esque portraits of a young Chairman Mao, Li became a founding member of the Political Pop movement in contemporary Chinese art. Recently, he has continued to push boundaries with his photographs of insects and flowers, which, upon close inspection, reveal themselves to be composites containing close-up images of human body parts, including skin and genitals. Underlying Li's self-described biological art is a fascination with technological advancements in the field of biology, such as cloning. The work stresses that all living creatures share more in common than is commonly acknowledged.
