He was married, had two sons and a daughter. He died in 1960 in Bothkamp, Germany. He studied architecture and became a freelance painter, having success with his water color landscapes and ink drawing s of castles around Germany, France and Italy where he stayed as an artist-in-residence for months at a time. In the 1950s he joined the artisan group in Zurich known as "Der Zuricher Kreis." Many of his ink drawings originated there.
