Al-Attar's work is rooted in the visual traditions of the Middle East, including Islamic design and ancient Assyrian sculpture reliefs. Born in 1942 in Baghdad, Iraq, she received her undergraduate education at Baghdad University and went study at both the Wimbledon School of Art and London Central School of Art and Design during the mid-1970s. Her departure from Iraq and separation from family members a young woman triggered profound reflections upon Iraqi culture and memories of Baghdad.
