Theresa Chromati
United StatesArt Brokerage: Theresa Chromati American Artist: b. 1992. Theresa Chromati paints full-figured Black women to explore themes of women's empowerment and body issues. Wearing masks and pussy lips as armor for self preservation, Chromati's figures challenge ideas of ownership, identity, and appropriation against a colorful backdrop of abstract shapes, checkerboard tiles, and stairway railings. Raised in Baltimore, Chromati references women from her childhood into her work to convey the familial and intimate relationships and styles of communication between Black women. In works such as Reclining Woman (Wig Connection) (2017), Chromati addresses the rules enforced on women, while exploring the available experiences for women in the private and public space. Her paintings have been featured in the New York Times, i-D, Interview Magazine, and Hyperallergic. Her work is in collections that include the Nasher Museum of Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Baltimore Museum of Art. She received her BFA from the Pratt Institute. Listings wanted.
