Art Brokerage: Vernon Fisher American Artist: B. 1943-2023. Since the early 1970s the Texas-based artist Vernon Fischer has worked at the intersection of Pop and conceptual art, juxtaposing images and text to create ambiguous, multilayered compositions. Resisting attempts to categorically decode them, his paintings and installations draw on pop culture, mass-media imagery, and art-historical and literary references, resulting in elliptical narratives about contemporary culture and society. Fischer's work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, including in a 2010 retrospective Vernon Fisher: K-Mart Conceptualism at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and in solo shows at Mark Moore Gallery in Santa Monica, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Scottsdale Museum of Art, and the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been shown in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, the Miami Art Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, ICA London, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Guggenheim. Fisher was included in the Whitney Biennial in 1981 and 2000, and in 1995 he was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Listings wanted.
