Story / Additional InfoThe title refers to a connection to the ancestors. The artist has a dual heritage, Hispanic on her father’s side and Anglo on her mother’s side. The child in the center has half of her face blank which relates to her confused identity. She holds a boat to represent ancestry that arrived by boat. The shapes at the bottom represent ancestors and the trees morph into their collective shapes, reaching toward the girl. The trees in the background are somewhat menacing and but the girl is separated from them by the dark figure with arms outstretched protectively. The forms on either side of the girl, represent primitive, indigenous figures engaged in a rite or ceremony of passage. Other viewers may read other interpretations into this art piece, which the artist would welcome as valid, since it may arouse different responses.
