Art Brokerage: ERO American Artist: b. 1967-2011. ERO (born Dominique Philbert AKA "ERO" (Ever Rocking On), 1967-2011, American) was a New York City-based street artist and a pioneer of the 1980s graffiti movement. ERO's bold use of colors like electric blue and orange, and his ability to assimilate the best aspects of spontaneous "tag graffiti" onto canvas, allowed him to create vibrant works full of the energy of city life. ERO started spray-painting in the East Village neighborhood of New York City at the age of eleven and as a young teenager he befriended other working street artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat (who later portrayed ERO in one of his compositions), then later beginning to work primarily on large-scale canvases and on designing fabric. Reaching early success, ERO first exhibited at New York's Fun Gallery at the age of fifteen. Often incorporating language and symbols into his work through graffiti-style writing, ERO used strategies of abstraction to both conceal and reveal meaning. In 1983 his work toured galleries throughout Japan as part of the group exhibition Five-Man Show alongside other key street artists of his generation such as Fab Five Freddy, Zephyr, Futura 2000, and Dondi White. In addition to exhibitions in New York, his work has been shown internationally at galleries in Sweden, Germany, and Japan. Works by ERO and his personal sketchbook are included in the current exhibition Writing the Future: Basquiat and the Hip-Hop Generation on view at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston until May 2021. He lived and worked in New York until his passing in 2011 at the young age of 43. Listings wanted.
