Carlos Merida - Guatemala
Art Brokerage: Carlos Merida Guatemalan Artist: b. 1891-1984. Carlos Merida was born in Guatemala and as a young man spent some time in Paris before settling in Mexico, where he got involved with the Mexican mural painting school as an assistant to Diego Rivera. However, Merida's practice is more closely aligned with that of Rufino Tamayo. Like Tamayo, Merida preferred the intimacy of easel painting to the mural painting. Both Tamayo and Merida combined European Modernism with subjects specific to the Americas. In 1950 Merida abandoned the figure completely and worked in a purely geometric style until his death. Amor de Tres is a wonderful example of work from the geometric period of Merida's career, showing his engagement with Constructivist and Cubist traditions. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
