Art Brokerage: Edward Bierly American Artist: b. 1920-2004. Edward Bierly (1920 - 2004) was already a successful illustrator when an event occurred in his life, which resulted in the decision to make wildlife art his life's work. His job as a designer of natural history exhibits for the National Park Service had led to an appointment by UNESCO as a museum consultant to the government of Rhodesia. It was on this assignment that he saw the wildlife of Africa for the first time. Moved both by its grandeur and its uncertain future, he determined then to use his art to attract attention to the plight of endangerd fauna everywhere. With this aim in mind, Ed switched from illustration to fine art and launched his new career with a successful one-man show at Abercrombie and Fitch's New York Gallery. In 1975, he left the National Park Service to devote all of his time to painting at his home and studio in Lorton, Virginia. He is recognized internationally as a major wildlife artist. His paintings have been exhibited at the New York Natural History Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, The Royal Ontario Museum and the National Audobon Society. He has illustrated several books, including a field guide to Mammals of Rhodesia, Zambia and Malawi. His art appears in Dr. Grzimek's World of Animal Life Encyclopedia. His paintings have been reproduced on the covers of National Wildlife, International Wildlife, The Reader's Digest, Bassmaster Magazine and many state conservation publications. He was a three-time winner of the national competition for the Federal Duck Stamp design and was a lifetime member of the Society of Animal Artists. Listings wanted by Art Brokerage.
