Art Brokerage: Francesca Woodman American Artist: b. 1958-1981. Woodman was born on April 3, 1958, in Denver, CO, and her parents were the artists George Woodman and Betty Woodman. She attended a private boarding school, and it was there where she began developing her interest in photography. Woodman spent summers with her family in Italy, and in 1975 Woodman began attending the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Two years later, she traveled to Rome as part of a RISD honors program, which proved to be one of the most prolific periods in her life. She returned to America in 1978 and graduated from RISD, and moved to New York the following year to pursue a career in photography. She was known for her black-and-white self-portraits and images of other female models. Despite her short career, which ended with her suicide at the age of 22, Woodman produced over 800 prints during her life. Influenced by Conceptualism and featuring recurring symbolic motifs such as birds, mirrors, and skulls, Woodman's work is often compared to Surrealists such as Hans Bellmer and Man Ray.
