Francisco Toledo - Mexico
Art Brokerage: Francisco Toledo Mexican Artist: B. 1940. Francisco Toledo, a Zapotec, was born in 1940 in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. Toledo studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Oaxaca and the Centro Superior de Artes Aplicadas del Instituto de Bellas Artes, Mexico. In 1960 he moved to Paris from where he travelled through Europe. In 1965 when he returned to Mexico he started to promote and protect the arts and crafts in Oaxaca. Francisco Toledo is widely regarded as the most important, elusive and controversial artist working in Mexico today. His art draws on human, animal and mineral life and explores both indigenous, Zapotec, and worldwide cultures. He freely associates direct observations from nature with metaphors from literature and art. The work of Blake, Goya, and the writings of Kafka and Borges have been especially influential.Toledo's art is imbued with his Mexican heritage of history and mythology. Toledo has exhibited in many galleries in Mexico, Europe, South and North America and Asia. He is represented in public and private collections worldwide. Listings wanted.
