Gregory Eltringham
United StatesArt Brokerage: Gregory Eltringham American Artist: b. 1964. Gregory Eltringham is a painter, professor, and musician. He travels extensively during the year conducting research for his teaching and studio work, maintaining a flexible and portable studio practice allowing for continuous engagement and exchange. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo, duo, and group exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe. The figure has served as a vehicle of continuous investigation throughout his career, playing with a combination of portraiture and narrative, referencing farce, social dynamics, and personal experience. The work has evolved in recent years to address the vile underbelly that has been fully exposed over the past decade and doesn't seem to be going away: the blatant stupidity, toxic masculinity, the denial of facts, the grotesque, the absurd, and false morality. We are watching it all burn, this is nothing new, but the ability to witness via the daily deluge of the images and vitriol through media platforms is mind-numbing. In his work, no idea is too dumb, and no subject is taboo. The paintings at times might be compassionate, funny, accusatory, or mocking. They often comment on pleasure, questionable or bad behavior, or the limits of personal comfort. The overall practice continues to engage with the legacy and relevance of painting, positioned in relation to historical models with awareness of the current time and circumstances. Eltringham continues to question the current dialog regarding the current dialog of painting not being able to express the moment Listings wanted.
