By scrubbing the surface of the canvases with thin sheens of acrylic pigment, they feel light and ethereal. Transparent colors layered one after another craft a misty and atmospheric space. Based mostly on the idea of a theatrical stage, Sugito builds fantastical and spare worlds that are nearly devoid of human presence. This framework, with painted curtains pulled open to the sides of his canvases, allows Sugito to act as a surrealist, letting his imagination wander freely. Sugito seems to argue that within the confines of a painting and within the realms of a depicted stage almost anything is possible.
