Art Brokerage: Hiroshi Sugito Japanese Artist: b. 1970. Hiroshi Sugito born in 1970 in Nagoya, Japan lives and works in Nagoya, Japan. Hemakes paintings with a soft, chalky appearance. By scrubbing the surface of the canvases with thin sheens of acrylic pigment, they feel light and ethereal. Transparent colors layered one after another craft a misty and atmospheric space. Based mostly on the idea of a theatrical stage, Sugito builds fantastical and spare worlds that are nearly devoid of human presence. This framework, with painted curtains pulled open to the sides of his canvases, allows Sugito to act as a surrealist, letting his imagination wander freely. Sugito seems to argue that within the confines of a painting and within the realms of a depicted stage almost anything is possible. Sugito's strongest paintings are appealing because of an unanswered mystery where both a child's vision and an adult's reality merge. At his best, Sugito creates magically inventive paintings that shape themselves out of the ordinary structures of our lives, less as an escape to forget our ills than a means to bring us back to ourselves enlivened.
