John Allcott - United Kingdom
Art Brokerage: John Allcott British Artist: b. 1888-1973. John Allcott was a British realist painter. His scenes of sailing ships and steamers, depicted in an academic style, make his portraits of ships and vessels a pictorial vision of Britain's naval tradition. Similar to Allcott's style are the works of Francis Swaine and Willem van de Velde the younger, both mentors of the well-known British painter Joseph Mallord William Turner. Born on November 14, 1888 in Liverpool, United Kingdom, he went on to study at the Liverpool Institute and School of Art and worked as a deck boy on board tugboats and sailing ships. Arriving in Sydney, Australia in 1909, he spent 3 years sailing around the Australian coast until 1912, when he began painting theater sets and commissioned paintings. His naval works were shown at the San Francisco Maritime Museum in 1969. In Sydney he held a successful exhibition in 1970 at Proud's Art Gallery, which was in celebration of the bicentenary of James Cook's landing in Australia. Allcott died on July 13, 1973 in Sydney, Australia. Listings wanted.
