John (Jack) Gable, a Contemporary Realist painter and muralist, is known for his vivid use of color, light and detail, as well as for his extraordinary breadth of subject matter. His subjects range from sailing and boating, to the Boston Classical Orchestra, to the history of duck hunting on the Chesapeake. Born in 1944 in Frankfort, Kentucky, Gable has received awards from the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, and began his career as an automobile designer at GM, working under John De Lorean, among others. He was assistant chief designer for Pontiac in the late 1970s when he decided to move to Maine to pursue a career as an artist. Recognized as a master painter of classic automobiles, he was commissioned by the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, MI, to produce a 65-foot mural on the history of the automobile. He has done portrait work for the Smithsonian Institution, historic murals for the Willard InterContinental Hotel, and a portrait of U.S. Senator William Hathaway that hangs in Maine's Capitol Rotunda.
