Art Brokerage: Keith Vaughan British Artist: b. 1912-1977. A major Modern British artist, Vaughan was born in Sussex and a completely self-taught painter. In 1939, he abandoned a career in advertising to pursue painting. As a conscientious objector in the Second World War, he joined St John s Ambulance and was conscripted into the Non-Combatant Corps. It was his drawings of army life which first attracted attention. After the war, he shared a studio with John Minton for a number of years. His early Neo-Romantic style, heavily influenced by Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore, evolved into an unmistakeable portrayal of the human figure. His male nudes in landscape are particularly renowned; they reveal Vaughan's obsession with his sexuality and creativity. After battling cancer for several years, Vaughan committed suicide in 1977, finally overcome by his illness and life-long struggle with depression. His work is very well represented in public and private collections in England and abroad, including the Tate.
