Art Brokerage: Luo Zhongli Chinese Artist: b. 1948. Born in 1948 in Chongqing (Sichuan province), Luo Zhongli is one of the country's leading realist artists. Under the influence of his father, he began to study painting in his early age. In 1968 Luo Zhongli graduated from the middle school affiliated to Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, after then he went to the rural villages in Ta-pa Mountains initiatively and lived there for ten years. Following his graduation from the Oil Painting Department of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, Luo took his Master's degree in 1986 at the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Belgium. Luo's first solo exhibitions took place in Brussels and Cambridge, MA, in 1984 and 1985, respectively. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Chinese Artists' Association and professor of Sichuan Fine arts Institute. Luo Zhongli has been creating masterful portraits of the people of southwestern China. Luo's 1980 portrait, Father, his most highly acclaimed work, is considered one of the most recognizable works of contemporary Chinese art. The portrait was acquired by the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. More vitally, this old farmer's face was rendered as large as the portraits of Chairman Mao Zedong from that time : "My core was the concept shift - the time of God has passed, and here comes the time of man, upon whom our livelihoods really depend". "For the first time, a painting featured the true color of laboring people, who used to be only painted in a bright way," critic Shao Dazhen says. "It was a breakthrough in social ideology."
