Math Bass

Math Bass paints hyper-stylized compositions that transform crisp geometric shapes and simplified, almost abstracted depictions of familiar objects such as cigarettes, flowers, bones, and speech bubbles into surreal, contemporary hieroglyphics. The artist paints thin strokes of flat color onto raw canvases, whose surfaces evoke the clean graphics of 8-bit video games and the stark simplicity of street signage. Bass's symbols, however, are deliberately ambiguous and allow for multiple interpretations. They have exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Shanghai, London, Berlin, and beyond. Their work belongs in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, the Yuz Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
