Story / Additional Info"My two considerations in creating sculpture are form and content. Form that hasn’t been seen before yet based in art history. Content that is thinking through consumerism and its impact on the environment. I’m placing objects from climate change events on top of a consumer box. I have been bringing wood and other found objects, charred from recent fires from the west, or tossed in a Hurricane along the Florida coast, into a conversation with art history and mass consumerism by placing them atop a pedestal replica of Warholian commercial box. I think “The Climes Are a Changin’,” series will bring about conversations on climate change."

Mel Smothers - United States

Art Brokerage: Mel Smothers American Artist: After studying Pop Art with Wayne Thiebaud, Mel Smother's moved his studio from Davis, CA to New York City and began a dialog with the work of Andy Warhol. He had read in the New York Times that Andy Warhol's ocean side estate at Montauk, NY was recently sold, so, he made a point of driving out to Montauk to get a feel for the place.nFifty years ago, Andy was a very busy guy in New York City, he was famous and he was mass producing contemporary art from the images he found in the N. Y. Times. Montauk wasn't on Andy's busy calendar much. Mel took a look around and began painting Andy postcards thinking he would have liked that. Photo by Gabriele Grossi, Venice, Italy 2009.
