Art Brokerage: Paul Feiler German Artist: b. 1918-2013. Born in Germany and sent to school in England in 1933. He started painting at an early age and, in 1937, attended the Slade School of Art, alongside Patrick Heron, Adrian Heath and Bryan Wynter. After leaving the Slade, Feiler spent time travelling and teaching, including positions at the West of England College of Art in Bristol (appointed Head of Painting in 1960) and the St Ives Summer School, initiated by Terry Frost and Peter Lanyon. In the 1950s, he became known for his gestural abstractions and his associations with the post-war Modernists in St Ives. The 1970s brought a shift in his paintings; Feiler's preoccupation with space and structure lead to the meticulously ordered canvases of his more recent work, a natural progress of simplification. Two retrospective exhibitions have been held at Tate St Ives in 1995 and in 2004. His paintings are held in collection at the V&A, the Tate, and many others in the United Kingdom and abroad.
