Art Brokerage: Rudolph de Crignis Swiss Artist: b. 1948-2006. He was born in Winterthur, Switzerland. He studied at the Form + Farbe School for Art and Media Design in Zurich and the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany. He began his artistic career as a performance and video artist later shifting to painting inspired by a visit to New York in the late 1970s-early '80s, when he saw "To the People of New York," a series of Minimalist abstract paintings by the German painter Blinky Palermo in the collection of the Dia Center for the Arts. De Crignis began making seemingly monochrome paintings, often in radiant blues or subtle grays. Considered the master of blue, applying a multitude of very thin layers of paint, most of them blue, some of other colors, before applying the final coat of blue. The result in each case was a variation on blue, subtle and compelling. Built up from numerous thin layers of different colors, they had a luminous depth that was compared more than once to the light installations of James Turrell. Rudolph de Crignis's work has been widely exhibited and is in numerous public and private collections. Listings wanted.
