Art Brokerage: Syd Solomon American Artist: b. 1917-2004. The abstract painter Syd Solomon was among the earliest artists to adopt the newly developed medium of acrylic paint and to experiment with aerosol sprays and resists in the years following World War II. In 1962, his painting Silent World (1961) was the first work of contemporary art to be added to the Ringling Museum of Art's collection. Solomon attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before enlisting in the army during the war. He served in the First Camouflage Battalion, where he used his artistic skills to design camouflage instruction manuals that would be used during the Normandy Invasion. Considered one of the army's best camoufleurs, he was awarded five Bronze Star medals for his service; his experience designing camouflage would greatly impact his later work. Settling in Sarasota, Florida, after the war, Solomon also drew inspiration from the state's aquatic ecosystems, creating abstract underwater views of refracted light streaming down from the water's surface.
