Vivi Crandall - Germany
Art Brokerage: Vivi Crandall German Artist: 1944-2000. A native of Germany and European trained, Vivi Crandall is known for her dramatic, action-filled paintings of animals in western landscape. As a young woman, she attended art school on a scholarship to the Sorbonne in Paris, but unhappy with that experience because of tedious copying of Old Master paintings, she returned to Germany. There she attended the Bauhaus design school in Munich and the Academy of Art in Bremen, studying sculpture, pottery, architecture, graphic and fashion design in addition to painting. For twenty years, she was art director for "The Washington Post" and then in 1973, she and her husband moved to Wyoming where they settled near Casper. They became owners of a dude ranch and served as hunting guides, and also became gallery owners, fund raisersnfor wildlife, and publishers of Crandall's wildlife prints.nIn the off-season from the dude and hunting ranch, Crandall painted and established herself in the art market as a wildlife artist, a subject she studied continually in her guide activities. She had learned to hunt as a child in Germany, where hunting was a privilege because of the smallness of the country, and wildlife art conveyed a sense of that privilege to its owners.
