Story / Additional InfoWade Hoefer brought the distinctive countryside of his native California to vivid life in his atmospheric, sun-dappled landscapes. The figurative painter drenched his landscapes in a hazy sunlight; devoid of any trace of human presence, they are imbued with a palpable sense of stillness and tranquility. Using a palette of predominantly earth colors, Hoefer perfectly captures the dimming light at the end of a day and the sun receding over the horizon behind a meadow, forest, or small inland stream. Generally working on a large scale, Hoefer sought to give his viewers a physical rather than intellectual experience, providing the deepest possible connection to the landscape he loved. Hoefer’s profound relationship to the Californian wine country stemmed from his time as a landscape architect and vineyard manager in Sonoma County. His work captures the unique colors, light, and topography of the region with dazzling virtuosity.
