An honored artist of the RSFSR (1963), people's Artist of the RSFSR (1977), a Member of the Union of the Artists, laureate of the RSFSR I.E.Repin State Prize (1960), Government prize winner (1950), a Soviet academician (1975). He was born March 21, 1917 in Suzdal, Vladimir region. He graduated from '1905' Moscow Art School in 1936, studied under N.P.Krymov, K.F.Morozov. Studied at Moscow Surikov's Art Institute under S.V.Gerasimov, I.E.Grabar. He taught at Surikov's Art Institute (1948-1951). Specialized in thematic paintings showing scenes of Russian country life. Well-known works include 'Leading People in the Kremlin' (1949), 'Before the Dances' (1961), 'On Saturday' (1964). Kugach, who passed away in April of 2013, was an influential teacher and leader among Russia's Realist painters. He influenced many artists within his own family including nephew Nikita Fedosov, son Mikhail Kugach, grandson Ivan and granddaughter Ekaterina. He also organized and led the Moscow River artists group, which has become an important pillar of community for artists in the years since the disintegration of the USSR. Listings wanted.
