Antonio Jacobsen
DenmarkArt Brokerage: Antonio Jacobsen Danish Artist: b. 1850-1921. Antonio Jacobsen was born November 2, 1850 in Copenhagen. He was the son of a violin maker. Although he was expected to follow his father's footsteps, Antonio chose art instead and studied at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. His studies were interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War. To avoid conscription he came to America in 1871. In New York City he found work decorating iron safes. While so employed, he painted the vessels of the Old Dominion Steamship Line and began his life work as specialist in steamer portraits. After 1880 he moved to West Hoboken, New Jersey, although it appears he kept a studio in New York City. Antonio died on February 2, 1921. He was a most prolific American marine painter, and is represented in almost every large marine collection in Europe and America. Listings wanted.
