Art Brokerage: Bettina Clowney American Artist: b. 1946-2020. Bettina Clowney was a painter based in Philadelphia. She graduated from Tyler College of Art. She has shown in local galleries and exhibitions, and has been collected nationally and internationally. What interests her is a spectrum of abstraction and realism that evokes both stillness and vitality. The work tends to be made in cycles: still life, figures and abstraction. Bettina uses collage for sketching out an idea because it's fun and can be surprising. What unifies her work is the idea that all matter is energy. That's why she can make a still life and have my apples move. The figure work is often in multiples, because there are many aspects in being ourselves. Bettina employs the 13th century Moscow school technique incorporating materials that I find to be unique, such as 24 k gold leaf, egg tempera, hand made paint with pure pigments, and true gesso on a special board. The cave paintings in Chauvet, France have provided me with an additional source of inspiration, as do works and teachings by artists such as Velasquez, Francis Bacon, Vermeer, Cezanne, Matisse, Rothko, and Hockney.
