Daniel Jean-Baptiste
Art Brokerage: Daniel Jean-Baptiste Artist: b. 1963. Jean-Baptiste was born on the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia, in 1963, to parents of Dutch, French Jewish and African Carib Descent. His childhood experience was that of a tiny one street fishing village of Choiseul, under the shadow of the towering Gros Piton. Spare time was spent fishing off the village's long wooden jetty, which gave Jean-Baptiste his first glimpse of the colourful creatures that inhabited the Caribbean Sea. The plants and fish that intrigued the young boy would later dominate his art. Childhood days were sweet, sweet as perfumed breezes of Saint Lucia. In 1978 he moved to Toronto, Canada where he was introduced to silk painting during the eight years working in commercial art for a display company. In 1988 Jean-Baptiste created his design company, Cobalt Illustrations, that produced hand - painted silk banners for commercial interiors across Canada. In 1995 he moved back to Saint Lucia with his wife and two children. His work reflects the beauty of the island. Jean-Baptiste focuses on his subject, magnifying its beauty, with the translucency and natural lustre of the silk enhancing colour. He is the originator of the shimmering light water technique.
