Story / Additional InfoFelix de Weldon created what would become his life's masterpiece, the forty-eight foot high monument of The Flag Raising On Iwo Jima.
In 1950 President Truman appointed Felix de Weldon chairman of the United States Fine Arts Commission. In 1956 he was re-appointed by President Eisenhower and in 1961 by President Kennedy to the Presidential Fine Arts Counsel. In 1959 he was knighted for his service to the British Crown becoming "Sir Felix de Weldon".
