Art Brokerage: Gertrude Greene American Artist: b. 1904-956. Among the first abstract artists to make sculptures, Gertrude Greene was a largely self-taught painter and sculptor and a seminal figure in the American avant-garde. While living in Paris from 1931-32, Greene was influenced by such avant-garde European and Russian artistic movements as Constructivism, Surrealism, and Cubism. In her own work, she combined geometric shapes and biomorphic forms and alternated between hard-edged finishes and expressive, sketchy brushstrokes. Towards the end of her life, Greene used her palette knife to create richly textured paintings that would garner her critical acclaim.
