Art Brokerage: Harold Shapinsky American Artist: b. 1925-2004. American abstract-expressionist Harold Shapinsky, born in Brooklyn, New York, resolved to become a painter at 15 and dropped out of school. In 1948 he was invited to join the Subjects of the Artist, an informal studio school associated with colleagues such as Motherwell, Baziotes, Rothko and others. Shapinsky's works are characterized by an energy and intensity that transcends their intimate scale. However, his work came into public consciousness only in the mid-1980's because of the publicity generated by Akumal Ramachander, an Indian teacher and art lover, who became convinced of his genius. Ramachander organized Shapinsky's first one-may show at Mayor Gallery in London in 1985 to stellar reviews and a near sell-out show.To date, Shapinsky's works have garnered international renown and can be found in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Tate Museum, among others. He was an associate of Jackson Pollock.
