Art Brokerage: Carlos Loarca Guatemalan Artist: b. 1937. Carlos Loarca was born in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala in 1937, and moved to San Francisco' s Mission District in 1956. Loarca was a founding member of GalerÃa de la Raza and worked closely with the GalerÃa during its early years. Loarca was the director of the art gallery at the Mission Cultural Center and was the gallery director at SOMARTS. Loarca has been painting for over five decades. His work is based on the tradition of the Maya Indian which infuses the bright vibrant colors of nature. He first started doing murals with elementary school children in San Francisco which were followed by well known murals on San Francisco's Mission Cultural Center and General Hospital. His most unique murals were with homeless children in the garbage dumps of Guatemala City, Honduras, the former USSR, and New Mexico. Loarca's communicative masterpieces infuses bright Mayan colors with Guatemalan mythology. His muse, El Cadejo, comes alive in his work which has developed into a parallel of Loarca's life. Painting has allowed for healing to occur in Loarca's life as he has overcome his addiction.
