Art Brokerage: Park West Artist: J. D. Miller American Artist: b. 1953. J.D. Miller didn't start out as a professional artist. Prior to becoming a full-time painter and gallery owner, Miller had a thriving career as a musician, music producer and commercial jingle writer. From a very early age, Miller was attracted to art – particularly the rich, vibrant colors of the Warner Brothers cartoons and the genius work of the Walt Disney studio animators. Miller completed his bachelor's degree in 1978 at the University of North Texas, where he studied communication, music (guitar and trumpet) and art. After graduating, he went on to two years of graduate work in art and ceramics. Eventually, drawing from influences in reading in psychology and his experiences in the music business, Miller and a select group of local artists founded the artistic philosophy of Reflectionism – an artistic school based on the Law of Attraction – the notion that whatever energies one puts out is ultimately reflected back to them. Standing on the shoulders of some of the great impressionists like Monet and Renoir, the post-impressionist Van Gogh and the revolutionary cubism of Picasso and Matisse, Miller takes the impasto technique to an extreme – nearly to the extent of creating a 3D sculpture on the canvas with small mountains of rich, striking oil colors and textures.
