SwitzerlandArt Brokerage: Josef Müller-Brockmann Swiss Artist: b. 1914-1996. Swiss artist Josef Müller-Brockmann was born in Rapperswil, Switzerland, in 1914. He is best known for his work as a graphic designer, teacher and author. After completing his training at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, he later opened his own design studio in Zurich in 1936. Throughout the course of his career, Müller-Brockmann gained a reputation for his minimalist approach, which often used a grid system to create clean, crisp designs. He was heavily influenced by the Swiss Style, a design movement that focused on clarity, attention to detail, and simplicity. Müller-Brockmann had a successful career as a graphic designer, and his work was recognized with numerous awards, including the Gold Medal from the Swiss Federal Office of Culture. His designs were used for major events, such as the International Exhibition in Switzerland in 1939 and the Swiss National Exhibition in 1958. In addition to his work as a designer, Müller-Brockmann was also a respected teacher and author. He taught at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and the Basel School of Design, and wrote several influential books on graphic design, including Grid Systems in Graphic Design and The Graphic Artist and His Design Problems.
