Art Brokerage: Chie Fueki Japanese Artist: b. 1973. Chie Fueki's striking cosmic works are charged with symbolism, moving fluidly between figuration and abstraction. Since receiving her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1998, she has gained recognition for her large-scale, mixed-media canvases that imbue collage and painting techniques with a distinct pointillist style. In 2005, Fueki was included in MoMA PS1's "Greater New York" exhibition; she had her first solo museum exhibition in 2014 at the Orlando Museum of Art. Over her career, she has depicted everyday scenes and, in more recent years, portraits of friends. Her works feature a diverse assortment of cryptic imagery—from American pop culture to traditional Japanese motifs—and fuse jewel-like tones and dynamic patterns. These dizzying-yet-harmonious compositions result from Fueki's intricate processes of cutting, painting, and gluing paper scraps, which she sometimes enriches with glitter and graphite rubbings. She is a 2021 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Fellowship award. Listings wanted.
